I started a small Web-based business out of my, mostly for fun and to learn about dot-com stuff. The business isn’t making any money yet and don’t expect it to do so for at least a year or two. However, there are expenses related to running it, i.e. home office supplies, heat, water, web space, etc. Can I take any deductions off the income from my full-time job?

You can take deductions from your home business operation.

But before you do so, you need to first determine whether your business is a business or merely a hobby. IRS makes a strong distinction between the two, and there is a limit on what you can deduct if your operations are merely your hobby (your phrase "mostly for fun" makes it sound like a hobby, not a profit-making venture).

    From the IRS website: http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=99239,00.html

"A hobby is an activity for which you do not expect to make a profit. If you do not carry on your business or investment activity to make a profit, there is a limit on the deductions you can take."

This page contains the various tests how to identify whether your activity is merely a hobby. I suggest you read IRS Publication 535, Business Expenses http://www.irs.gov/publications/p535/index.html to find out what you can deduct and what are the limitations

not sure exactrly what you are asking – at the end of the year it will come out in the wash. yah all your stuff is deductible when you do your taxes – which will include money you make from your full time job. so i guess the answer is yes unless i dont understand the question clearly. altho you do have to turn a profit within three years in order for the IRS to permit you to keep making deductions

Yes, your business is operating at a loss and you can deduct expenses from your business as a deduction on your income.

I’d have my taxes done by an accountant. It will probably cost you a couple hundred dollars but save you more then that.

The IRS takes a very hard look at businesses of that type. If they consider it a hobby, then none of the expenses are deductible — yet any income IS taxable. If audited, you may have to prove to them that you really do intend to turn a profit AS A BUSINESS eventually. A well-developed business plan will go a long way to help you there. If your business is progressing according to plan they may bite off on it and allow the deductions.
