I worked for a small business from June 09 to Oct 09.
I never filled out a W4 while working there. Also, my checks never came with a stub.
I always just got a check written out from their personal account. I know from the amounts of
the checks that deductions were being taken out. At the time I trusted them and didn’t do anything about it.
The business was obviously shoddily run and I had a lot of problems with them. I should have amended that situation earlier, but I didn’t even want to deal with them anymore at the time.
I know it’s still early, but I haven’t gotten a W2 yet and cannot get in touch with anyone from the business to request one.
What can I do if I don’t get a W2 form from them?
Can I still file if I don’t have pay stubs? I have no idea exactly what they took out for taxes.
My checks were always what I expected them to be after taxes, SS, etc were taken out as compared to other jobs where I made the same hourly wage.

I was definitely on their payroll during this time and legally should get a W2. I know this because I filed an unemployment claim. The employer appealed, but an UE judge ruled in my favor and I qualified. I am sure that decision didn’t make the employer very happy, but they still have to give me a W2.
Maybe it will still come before the 15th.

I didn’t know until I looked on the MN Dept. of Labor website today that legally they had to issue a paystub at the end of every pay period.
I could go on and on about the things that go on in that place.

My employer withholds taxes as if I were single but on my W-2 form I marked I have 2 dependents?

When I asked my employer if she was I was getting paid as if I were single with out dependents she said well do you have someone who does your taxes? I did not understand why she asked and said yes. Then she said thats where I claim my dependents. I do not think she understands that the more dependents the less money I will get withheld. I am in a small dental office that is new and just opening. The doctor pays with her own checks but on a sheet of paper marks the percentage of all my deductions. It is her first time being an employer, her first time opening and running her own business.

My question is how I explain to her that I want to get paid as if I had two dependents. I have two children. I get so much taxes taken off I need to either get another job or replace that one.

Can I do business under my own name?

I’m currently a college student and am getting back into freelance web design. I know that I need to report the income I make from it (I asked a question about it here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090617130930AATB9pX). What I need to know now is if I can do business under my own name? I would prefer to be able to deposit the checks to my personal checking account, much like my on-campus job, and not have to open a business checking account.

Also, again in regards to taxes, how exactly do I report this additional income? Do I report it as "other income" or do I have to report it as something else? And how do I include expense deductions (cell phone, computer, mileage, etc)?

I was hoping someone could help me with a mileage log tax question.?

I recently filed my taxes and claimed a large number of miles driven for work purposes. I was a delivery driver all last year and thought this was a legitamite tax deduction. My employer paid me minium wage and gave me .00 per delivery. The dollar was reimbursed at the end of each shift. It was not included with my regular pay. The dollar simply covered any gas costs incurred for the shift and did’nt cover any maintenace costs. The I.R.S went along with the deduction , but the State of Alabama sent me a letter yesterday. It stated that I need to provide them with: a letter from your employer verifying that the job expenses claimed on schuedule A, itemized deductions, were incurred in the performance of your job and why you were not reimbursed, cancelled checks and receipts for job expenses, and mileage log indicating, location, number of miles, and the business reason. I can provide a mileage log thats it. I was hoping someone could give me some suggestions.

Injured Spouse Form and Deductions?

I have 4 exemptions for kids, plus myself
husband can only take an exemption for himself

In my name only, I have mortgage and property tax deductions, and some business deductions

I owe some self-employment tax, but also paid taxes the first 4 months as an employee

My husband has no other deductions or credits and did not pay any taxes because his income was so very small after child support and other taxes (state, local, soc sec, medicare)

He owes back child support. My gross income was a little more than twice his.

We have to file jointly to get the EIC credit for my children.

We don’t live in a community property state.
How will my deductions, exemptions, etc. affect the way the refund is apportioned using the Injured Spouse Form?
I guess I wasn’t clear when I spoke of his income. No federal taxes were deducted from his checks because his income is so small.

After the support, state, local, soc. sec. and medicare taxes were taken out, his entire take home pay for the year was less than two of my house payments.

His gross income was about half mine, but most of it did not come to our household.I know that his support is not deductible. I am frustrated that it will be counted as income for our household, because it is not.

I am concerned that they will somehow give him part of the EIC for my children because we are married. He really isn’t supporting them at this point. His money is going to his children.

The bulk of our income, and the money that pays our bills, is from survivor’s benefits because my first husband died.

Thank you so much for answering my question with information I can use rather than making personal attacks and ridiculing us as has happened at a business forum where I asked for help.
