What should I do with my in-laws?

For 5 years I’ve tried to have a good relationship with my in-laws. Things never get better with them though. My father-in-law sexually harassed me, and even upon my husband’s request to quit touching me inappropriately, he kept on doing it until I broke the new to his wife (my MIL). Besides these incidents that left me forever traumatized, FIL is demeaning and offensive to my husband regularly. My mother-in-law didn’t approve of my union with my husband and made that very clear from the moment we decided to move in together. I made efforts by doing them favors, visiting them (without my husband), buying them gifts, assisting them in their business…etc. We were going to purchase our first home, had saved for a down payment plus my parents were gonna match up everything we saved. My husband works for his parents but receives only 30% of his weekly pay in check form, the rest is in cash because my in-laws don’t want to pay taxes I guess. My husband works almost 90 hours a week. When we finally found the perfect house, MIL decided to go M.I.A. only to announce by the end of the day that she wasn’t gonna give us his full paycheck that the mortgage broker was requesting. Result: obviously we didn’t get approved for the loan. I haven’t spoken to my in-laws ever since. Last week my husband had a terrible toothache and had to go to the dentist and have a wisdom tooth removed, it was a long process. He’s very responsible and never misses work. His pay came with a deduction for the day he went to surgery! I thought that not only because these are his parents but also because he busts his butt there 90 hours a week, he can’t take a paid day for medical purposes?

I have no future plans of ever holding a caring and loving relationship with my in-laws. My husband agrees with me because he has witnessed all that has been done(The story has many more unfortunate incidents, too long). What do you think?
Thank you all for your advice! We are a young couple, married for almost 4 years, and we have been making financial progress despite this huge problem. We’re learning the "tricks of the trade" slowly as my family lives in another country and his family isn’t helpful. Thanks again!

Taxes for Clueless Independent Contractor?

I have been working as an Independent Contractor for my employer as of 9/11/08. I didn’t have a paycheck by the 9/15 so I will be paying my income from 9/11 on by the 01/15/09 quarterly pay date for small businesses. By the end of the year I will have earned about ,400 from this job. The only deduction I have is about for transportation.

I also held another job earlier in the year from which I earned about 0. Social Security and Medicare were witheld, but not income tax. Altogether I will have earned under the ,200 limit for the entire year of 2008.

What I am unsure of is if I still need to pay income tax. My quarterly earnings are such that I would have earned a taxable amount had I earned that much every quarter, so I am confused about that.

Also, how much of the 15.3% SS&M do I need to pay? I’ve seen literature talking about how half of Social Security and Medicare is usually paid by employers, half of it can be deducted from net earnings…it’s all very very confusing to me.

If anyone can give me an answer, or clarify this that’d be great. I’m not in the market for consultants (I already know some.)

Is "Cash for Clunkers" a good model for "Heathcare Reform"?

Strangely enough…. as poorly thought out and implemented as this program is it actually is a very good concept for healthcare "reform".

This program sets aside a pool of money. American citizens can choose to use this money or not. They can use this money to buy a car of their choice, as long as it meets certain standards.

There is very little government interference in the choice of the consumer or the choice of the automobile dealer. The Consumer can buy the car they want…the dealer is free to advertise it’s merchandise and to offer additional incentives.

Apply this concept to healthcare. The government can offer tax credits to people to pay for insurance. You can get the insurance that you want from the provider you want. The government will then offer up to "X" amount annually in tax credits to pay for it. This will modify your deductions on your W4 so you keep the money in each paycheck. It never goes to the government and forces you to apply for a refund.

To be eligible you need to be enrolled all year…any partial year enrollments are credited on a pro rated basis.

American citizens can choose their providers….companies are free to compete for new business and will likely see a rise in enrollments (driving down prices) as a result.

Of course we will still need to take additional steps to reduce the actual COST of healthcare (tort reform, reduced regulatory costs) but isn’t this is a great start?
Regrugg -
Agreed.

I was using the model as an example. In the healthcare implementation people would keep their OWN money to pay for their insurance.

The principle is that the government allocate the money to be spent in the free market (as ironic as it is to allocate a person their own money)
ej -

It really didn’t fail. It was just overwhelmed and may run out of money. This was a failure of planning and implementation (an Obama Administration trademark)

The healthacre wouldn’t run out of money because it just allows people to keep their own money to be spent on their own needs.

It’s simple in concept

Have we finally found a workable idea for "Healthcare Reform"?

I voted for McCain albeit reluctantly. I was more inclined towards Mitt Romney the former Governor of my State.

My Final Paycheck is 21 days late and…?

is being held until I agree to sign a waiver releasing my employer his obligation to pay my state, federal, and payroll taxes. In other words allowing him to change my status to independent contractor. I’m not willing to do that because he hasn’t even come close to paying me my full salary. I was hired with as an employee to a small business with an offer letter in January for which I have the documentation. My paychecks, since being hired in January, reflected a tax deduction, but none were ever paid to the government. Now, in order to receive my final paycheck he is demanding I sign a waiver and is only willing to pay me 10 of the 19 days owed. Obviously this is illegal on many levels so what do I do to expedite the process?
