Is there a way to make pre-tax donations to charities through payroll deductions?

If an organization accepts donations non-profit, that money can be legally deducted from wages on a pretax basis? If this can be done, how to submit the tax return so that you do not claim it as an additional deduction?

I did the payroll for 20 years and have never heard this. Firstly, the money you give to charity is not exempt from social security and Med taxes so it can not be 100% tax free. And if you could do your W-2 has a lower wage for the Federal gross. Then, as your tax return at the end of the year, not just claim it. You can only ask if you list the gifts anyway, and unless you own your home, you probably can not explain. Write because it is right to do so, not because it wants bunt.

Why can you deduct daycare expense on your taxes?

but there’s no deduction if you’re self-employed and watch your own child? Technically, this is a business loss for me (though I don’t mind, obviously) because if I wasn’t watching my son, I would be freelancing during that time and earning more money.

Is there any way to "pay" yourself for childcare if you’re self-employed?
Edited – but I am "out" money – my entire salary from working full-time before I decided to stay home.
Okay – so if I never earned the money in the first place, I never paid taxes on it, therefore there’s nothing to "deduct" from my taxes. Still smells slightly unfair to me (in the sense that it penalizes SAH parents) but I understand.

Does anyone know of a good online program for filing corp taxes?

I have a very small business that is an Scorp…made absolutely no money …income is pretty much equal to expenses and I do not draw a salary. Once again I have put off till the last minute to file taxes. In reading some of the questions asked by others, am I correct in that I have to do this by March 15? (that was yesterday!!!!). I also worked full time for another company and have w2 forms for those jobs. I will be taking standard deductions since I don’t have enough to itemize. I am hoping I can just find a program online that will take me step by step. Oh… also have nothing that will be depreciated. Am I making a big mistake by trying to do this myself? help!

business math?

1-24 is what percent of 40?

2-sandra’s monthly salary is ,200. if deductions for taxes from her monthly paycheck are 0, what percent of her salary goes to these deductions?

3-the cost of an article including 15% for taxes is 8.00. what is the cost of the article without taxes?

“honest, hardworking people” vs. simple math?

i feels like everywhere i go i hear people complaining loudly about hardworking people being "punished" for making money.
i assume they’re referring to the fact that the more money you make, the greater a percentage you have to pay in income tax.

so, for example, Randy, a writer, makes ,000 a year and Brett, a business manager, makes 0,000. Randy has to pay about 25% of his income, while Brett has to pay about 33%. therefore, Brett is getting ripped off, right?

that’s the part that baffles me. after deductions are made, Randy has ,000 and Brett has 3,333. Randy can barely afford to support his wife and child. meanwhile, Brett opens up his Apple Pro laptop and posts a rant on Yahoo Answers titled "why do Dems want to take my money?"

maybe you believe that the more money you make, the harder of a worker you are. maybe you don’t. i don’t want assume Brett is greedy, but he is clearly not satisfied with the money he gets to keep. his next tax jump (from 33% to 35%) doesn’t occur until his salary reaches 7,700. how is that a lack of incentive?

and how is Brett a decent, hardworking american if he grumbles and complains about giving up the money that would go into a pool or a summer house in italy?

How to claim mileage for an employed sales person – WAY confused by the IRS explanation!?

I am an employee of a greeting card company. I am paid salary, not commission. I am given a 0 a month expense check to cover office supplies, gas, phone, etc. However, with the cost of gas, this is not covering even gas. I am tempted to claim business mileage, however, I’m not sure I even can as, technically, I am given money for gas. My tax lady said that it wouldn’t be worth it – as my deductions would have to be more than ,600 (my deduction for being married on my federal taxes). I’m so confused. I’m pretty sure that I should be able to keep a log and claim business mileage, but I would hate to do all that work only to find out I don’t qualify. Can anyone help me by putting this in laymans terms? Thanks a bunch!

Are higher taxes bad for the businesses?

I keep reading these comments here that claim that Obama will raise taxes on corporations, which will cause companies to shut down, and people to get laid off etc..

So here is a little information from someone who is quasi-literate in such affairs. First of all Obama is not talking about raising corporate taxes, which are very different from income tax. Obama wants to raise income tax (not corporate tax or capital gains tax) on families that make more than 250 thousand dollars a year. So your boss, who probably makes more than that, would want to get paid a little more so he can offset the higher tax that he would have to pay. The increase will come from the PRE-TAX profit of the company that you are working for. More a company pays in salaries the less it pays in tax as the salary, being an expense, is tax deductable. So in other words that tax that would otherwise be paid by the company is now paid by the individual (your boss). So why the whole drama? The answer is actually simple. Corporations have found a lot of loop holes in tax laws and they never pay the taxes that they are supposed to pay. The individuals on the other hand have to pay straight forward taxes based on W2s which some deductions.

So raising your boss’s tax rate is not going to effect your job or the health of the company you work for. Just the tax system will become better and more stream-lined.

I have tried to explain this as simply as possible. I know some of you are going to ask for sources, but you are no websites that will tell it to you in one paragraph. It is common sense if you want to understand it.

Husband Job changing from employee to 1099?

My husband has been with the same employer for 15 years. They started with over 50 employees and today they are down to just the owner and my husband. My husband has been managing the business and working and getting a set salary. The owner does not want to shut down the business but the overhead is getting high (the rent was raised 5 times higher at Jan 2009 which really hurt). The owner does not want to loose my husband and has offered to give him work and 1099 him, This would mean eliminating insurance, WC, and the high rent. He will lease my husband a company truck (for a month) and refer the work to my husband and pay him has an independent contractor. My husband’s employer gave him extra money to get a business licences. His job currently does not provide any sort of life/health/retirement benefits just a salary. I carry the health coverage and we have a retirement set up privately.

Besides the tax (increased SS and Medicare deductions) is there anything else that is bad about being an independent contractor compared to the previous salary position he had.

Local jobs are hard to come by and we have a disabled child and hate to move. The only other option is a job that is salaried which would mean my husband traveling 3-4 days a week out of town, which would be stressful.
The work has been steady, just the overhead is high. It is the oldest business of its kind in our city and they have alot of repeat customers Ovehead went from 4k a month to 13k and for having one employee 13k a month is alot to pay. They still have average 15k month in profit, but after 13k overhead does not leave enough with 4k it was fine.
One person in our city bought up most of the prime downtown and that is when the rent raised. It took 4 months to get a slightly smaller place but it was still higher rent. The owner also stated that if the situation changed, he would bring him in as a partner or re-instate the salary. I have no reason to not believe the owner. Several times there were smaller financial issues with the company and the owner always paid the employees and did not draw his own salary.

Business Math Help!!! Word problem?

Gary Benton’s gross weekly salary is 1.00. His weekly federal withholding is .18. The Social Security tax is 6.2 percent of the first ,000.00. The Medicare tax is 1.45 percent of gross pay. The state tax is 1.5 percent of gross pay. Each week he pays .40 for medical insurance. What is Gary’s total deduction?
